This term our topic is Reptiles and Dinosaurs.
Please have a look at our topic below:
Unicorn Class celebrated Chinese New Year, learning about the traditions and customs and about the story of the 12 animals who had a race in order to have a year named after them. This also helped us to learn about ordinal numbers in maths and we had races to practise them in P.E. Miss Keeble helped us to make up our own Chinese Dragon dance and we turned our computer area into Chinese Restaurant where we could read the menu, write down orders, count and sort the ‘food’ and practise using chopsticks!
In Unicorn Class this half term we have enjoyed learning about People Who Help Us in school, at home and in the wider community. We learnt the names of all the staff in school and talked to them about their role at Woodham Walter. We discussed who helps us at home and drew pictures of our loved ones, thinking about what they do for us. We learnt about the Emergency Services; the Police, the Fire, the Ambulance Service and what they do. As we have come together as a new class for the first time we have also talked about friendships, how to be a good friend, about sharing, taking turns, being kind and listening to each other. We read lots of stories about friendships and how the characters in these stories helped each other. We worked with a friend to create a ‘friendship’ picture where we explored colour mixing and painted pictures of ourselves for our ‘Self-Portrait Gallery’. We have also been extremely busy learning the first few phonemes and ‘tricky words’ in our Phonics lessons and practising counting, number recognition, sorting, sharing and 2D shapes in Maths. The Year 1 children have continued to make great progress with their reading and writing by practising every day and have been learning place value, number bonds and addition and subtraction in their maths lessons. Well done, Unicorns! What a great start to the year!
